Our external struggle is often a projection of our inner shadow.

Today, in Aotearoa’s shifting socio-political landscape, leaders, like you, are driving an important diversity journey that’s redefining our societal fabric. This path, illuminated by my work at MindHub and Wiser, is not merely about bridging divides but exploring the deeper connections that our shadows—those unacknowledged parts of ourselves—can reveal. These parts are the collection of powerful repressed desires you hide from the world. Important desires you do not feel skilled enough to show and inherently dislike in others. Particularly those we perceive as different. But, if you learn to see, embrace and integrate the shadow you discover a deeper, more authentic and tolerant connection with yourself and others. This profound leadership skill is essential for transforming our diversity into wisdom.

Reflect on moments when you’ve experienced these transformative shadow skills:

  • See Shadow: Recall a time when deep self-questioning revealed hidden motives impacting your leadership. Simplify this by patiently asking, “What hidden desire is guiding me here?” This process not only deepens self-awareness but also helps you recognise and navigate your leadership shadow, making your decision-making more conscious and aligned with your true intentions.
  • Embrace Shadow: Remember an instance where embracing ‘both-and’ thinking unveiled a wisdom-filled path through seemingly impossible differences. Enhance this wisdom by actively seeking to hold, understand and articulate opposing views before contributing your own. Ask, “How does their truth broaden my understanding?” and expand my capacity to hold multiple truths.
  • Integrate Shadow: Consider a moment where profound influence was achieved not through asserting dominance, but through the wisdom of being open to being influenced. Practise this novel leadership paradox by entering conversations with the intent to learn, evolve and change, not just persuade or win.

As we face New Zealand’s evolving socio-political environment, engaging with our shadows becomes crucial for leaders aiming to harness diversity for collective success. MindHub and Wiser invite you to embark on this journey, offering paths to develop these essential shadow skills for a future where diversity is not just celebrated but leveraged for unparalleled innovation and sustainable growth.
